General Youth Coaching FAQs

  • Generally, at least 13 years old.

  • My focus is on student-athletes, but not exclusively. I’m happy to work with anyone who is motivated. However, young people who are struggling with depression, substance abuse, violence, eating disorders, or other significant personal challenges would be better served by a therapist.

  • Sessions focus on whatever parts of the teen’s life that they most want to change. Neither the coach nor the parent/guardian sets the topic, only the teen themselves.

  • No. Coaching is about taking ownership of your life, regardless of your age. It’s crucial that the client chooses for themselves what they want to work on.

  • No. All coaching sessions are conducted between only the coach and teen client. Occasional check-in calls will include at least one parent/guardian and will allow the teen to share parts of their coaching work.

  • Yes. Confidentiality is crucial for the building of a trusting relationship between the teen client and coach. The only exceptions to this policy are in instances where there is a threat to either the client's safety or the safety of others.

  • A key component of coaching is that it is client-driven, meaning that the coach supports the client in discovering for themselves their own life vision and the changes they want to make. Mentoring typically follows a role-model approach which tends more toward direct advice giving.

  • If your teen fully engages in the coaching process, you can expect them to develop a clearer sense of their personal priorities, their interests/passions, and an improved understanding of how to achieve their goals.

  • Not typically. But if you have results from previously taken tests that you think are relevant, I welcome the chance to review them.

  • Most coaching sessions are done over the phone or by video call. In-person meetings, depending on geography, are also an option.

  • We begin with a 3-month commitment, then move to month-to-month. Changes do not happen overnight, and often there is a period of trial and error as new life strategies are devised and tested out.

  • Cost depends on the length of each session and the number of monthly sessions. Please reach out for an estimate.

  • Yes! The process is playful and creative. If things get too formal, the brain becomes restricted and the work can’t be as impactful.
